I do not have an art major or some big fancy degree but I have always been a 'maker' with a creative soul. From a very young age, I would draw, write stories and make fancy doll houses from cardboard boxes.
As a young child I had dreams of becoming an architect or a graphic designer and when the 'internet' came along I began a career in web design. As much as I loved designing web sites, it just wasn't the same as making something with my hands.
That's where my joy of making birthday and Christmas cards for family and friends helped fill this void.
Hooked on Card Making at 15
It all began with a PSX rose stamp and some gold embossing powder
I bought my first rubber stamp from a little stall when I was 15 and back then it was fashionable to stamp and heat emboss your images. There wasn't really a lot of 'coloring' going on.
Over the years I would attend different craft shows and get hooked on a new idea but around Christmas 2009 I stumbled across a Magnolia stamp and fell in love. This led to discovering COPIC markers and falling head over heels in love with this new way of creating cards. I also hadn't realised there was a whole world of crafters online and I soon began to join different groups, set up a blog and have fun joining card making challenges. I was even asked to join some design teams and in fact ended up being on the official Magnolia Design Team where I would create and write coloring tutorials for their print magazine.
I had an opportunity to make a dream come true
When my grandmother passed away she generously left me some of her life savings and I felt this would be a wonderful opportunity to combine two of my passions - web design & making - which led to the beginning of my store Make it Crafty. I was buzzing with so many ideas and over time have built a store full of an amazing array of digital stamps, rubber stamps and chipboard designs.
I am a MAKER at Heart
Thinking outside the box and pushing yourself beyond your current capabilities is how you really improve
I am a maker at heart and although I loved working on the store I really just loved learning and creating. I brought together an amazing team of ladies and we would all challenge each other to think outside the box and expand our coloring and creative skills. It was such an amazing period to be honest as before we began challenging ourselves and our followers, most of the 'coloring' of stamps was quite 2D. Very similar to coloring books as a child.
I began creating videos sharing how I would imagine and add my own folds and creases to clothing and in fact if you have seen the 'no line' technique before, I can in fact put my hand up as the originator of that particular technique for stamping.
Knowledge is Power
I probably should have become a teacher
If there is one thing I have learned about myself over the years, it's that I can't help but share what I have learned with everyone else.
It doesn't matter what the subject is, I seem to have a natural instinct to want to pass on what I have learned. Recently we acquired a gorgeous little puppy and I am overloaded with information, researching all the ins and outs of the different learning stages, types of training, feeding and more... and as I learn and experience new stages with my little pup, I find myself sharing what I have learned with others going through similar stages asking for help.
The same thing happened in the crafting world when I began to feel confident in my abilities to tame the COPIC marker.
Build Your Confidence
Sometimes you just need a little guidance
I began with coloring challenges, aiming to push people outside their comfort zone, but I soon realised that not everyone had the confidence to just give it a go and needed a little guidance.
Whilst trying to discover how I could help, I began to investigate creating a live online class website, however seven years ago the platforms available to do this were quite complicated. Therefore I began to focus on writing in depth e-book tutorials and creating videos on YouTube.
Over the years I have revisited the idea a few times and even spent a year doing live broadcasts on Periscope which was a lot of fun.
But one of the best experiences I had teaching, was when I joined my gorgeous friend Jennifer Dove in the USA supporting her during a couple of her MEGA COPIC BOOTCAMPS. The first time I was there we had over 60 ladies attend the 4 day course!
So Why Now?
Honestly, I believe I have a knack for teaching... and it was time to bring it all together
Which brings me to now. Why have I created this site and why should you take my classes? Honestly, I believe I have a knack for teaching and want to share my knowledge with you.
I don't claim to know it all or expect you to color exactly the way I do. Like you, I am always pushing myself to learn more and when I learn more, I will find ways to pass that information on in a way that is easy going and comfortable to learn.
The platforms available to assist in teaching online have really matured making it both easy for me to build a course and easy for you to take a course. Sometimes you just have to wait for the right technology to come along to bring all your ideas together.
Now I understand my teaching methods may not be for everyone so I have created an introductory course that you are welcome to join to see if we click! I sure hope we do as I look forward to helping you build the confidence to push beyond your comfort zone.
